Fairyland Frolics by Doreen Baxter is a beautifully illustrated mid-century children’s book that captures the timeless charm of classic British fairy tales. Originally published in 1950, this delightful volume features enchanting full-page and in-text colour illustrations depicting woodland fairies, friendly animals, birds and magical scenes that evoke the golden era of children’s book illustration. The gentle storytelling and nostalgic artwork make it appealing not only to young readers but also to collectors of vintage illustrated children’s books.
Published in the early post-war period, Fairyland Frolics reflects the warmth and innocence characteristic of British children’s publishing during the 1950s. The beautifully executed illustrations remain the highlight of the book, with vibrant colours and exceptional artistic detail that continue to impress more than seventy years after publication. Whether displayed on a shelf, added to a collection of vintage juvenile literature, or enjoyed for its artwork alone, this title represents a charming piece of children’s publishing history.
Copies of Fairyland Frolics are becoming increasingly difficult to locate, particularly complete examples retaining their original dust jacket. Although this copy has suffered significant structural wear, it still offers excellent value as a reading copy, reference copy, or collectible for those seeking Doreen Baxter’s work. The internal pages and illustrations remain remarkably well preserved, allowing the beauty of the artwork to shine despite the book’s external condition. An attractive addition for collectors of vintage fairy books, illustrated children’s classics, nursery literature and mid-century British publishing.
Condition – Fair
The original illustrated dust jacket is heavily worn with substantial edge wear, chipping, tears and loss, particularly around the spine. The hardcover binding has failed, leaving the text block detached from the boards. Despite the severe structural damage, the internal pages are exceptionally clean, bright and complete with virtually no noticeable marking, foxing or handling wear. The illustrations remain crisp, vibrant and beautifully preserved.
