Little Veld Folk is one of the most charming and distinctive South African children’s books of the Second World War era. Written by Cecil J. Shirley and published in 1943, the book introduces young readers to the fascinating birds, mammals and smaller creatures of the Rhodesian veld through engaging stories inspired by the author’s own observations of nature. Richly illustrated throughout with delightful black-and-white drawings and featuring a striking colour pictorial cover, the work remains highly collectible among enthusiasts of Rhodesiana, Africana, wildlife literature and vintage children’s books.
The author, despite remarkable physical challenges, produced a work that has become an enduring part of Southern African publishing history. Each story reflects an intimate knowledge of veld life, encouraging appreciation of indigenous wildlife while entertaining readers with memorable encounters involving birds, small mammals and predators. The attractive cover artwork, incorporating animals into stylised tree-trunk lettering, has become instantly recognisable to collectors and is one of the book’s greatest visual strengths.
Today, Little Veld Folk is increasingly difficult to locate, particularly in complete first editions. It appeals not only to collectors of Rhodesiana but also to those interested in South African illustration, natural history, conservation history and early educational literature.
Its historical significance, distinctive artwork and enduring charm make it a desirable addition to any Africana, wildlife or children’s book collection. Although this copy shows evidence of having been well loved by its previous owner, Little Veld Folk remains complete and presents well enough to serve as an affordable reading or collector’s copy of a scarce wartime publication. The book was first published by the Central News Agency (CNA) in 1943 and consists of twelve illustrated stories based on Rhodesian wildlife.
