Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens From The Little White Bird by J. M. Barrie, illustrated by Arthur Rackham, is a treasured edition of a classic tale originally published by Hodder & Stoughton and reprinted in various years, including the 1950s, that celebrates the earliest literary incarnation of Barrie’s beloved character. This standalone work was first extracted from Barrie’s 1902 novel The Little White Bird and issued in 1906 with Rackham’s exquisite illustrations, bringing the story of Peter Pan’s first magical adventures to generations of readers beyond the adult‑oriented original text.
In Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens From The Little White Bird, Barrie introduces readers to Peter as a seven‑day‑old who escapes from his nursery and returns to the enchanted Kensington Gardens, where he meets fairies, birds and other whimsical creatures. This early Peter Pan story blends fantasy and poetic prose, capturing a world where children are “betwixt and between” childhood and fairy‑tale wonder, anchored in the real London gardens that inspired Barrie’s imagination.
The illustrations by Rackham are a highlight of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens From The Little White Bird, widely celebrated for their charm, depth and artistic innovation. Rackham’s signature watercolor plates and black‑and‑white drawings amplify the narrative’s enchantment, making this edition as visually compelling as it is narratively engaging. These artistic elements have contributed to Peter Pan’s longstanding appeal among collectors and lovers of classic children’s literature.
Collectible and enduring, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens From The Little White Bird holds a special place in the canon of Barrie’s works, predating the later Peter and Wendy and offering a uniquely lyrical perspective on the origins of Peter Pan’s story. Its combination of literary significance and artistic excellence continues to delight readers and collectors alike, making it a cherished addition to any library of illustrated classics.
Condition – Very Good – Plum coloured cloth boards with blind-stamped decorative frame and illustration show noticeable shelf wear and age-related fading, most pronounced along the spine where the gilt title has dulled yet remains legible. The head and tail of the spine display moderate wear, and two corners are exposed through rubbing. Boards remain firm overall. Text block edges are slightly discoloured from age. Internally, the binding is tight and stiff with all pages securely attached. All 16 colour plates are present as called for. Foxing is evident on some pages, consistent with age, but the book remains structurally sound and fully readable — a complete vintage copy showing honest wear.
