The 1961 South African 50 Cents coin marks the introduction of the decimal Rand currency system, replacing the old pound, shilling, and pence system. Issued in the year South Africa became the Republic of South Africa, this coin represents a significant turning point in the country’s monetary history.
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, the founder of the Cape settlement, accompanied by the bilingual motto “EENDRAG MAAK MAG · UNITY IS STRENGTH”, symbolising national unity during a period of political change.
The reverse displays the iconic springbok antelope, one of South Africa’s most recognisable national symbols. Surrounding the design are the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA” and the denomination “50c”. This classic springbok motif became one of the most enduring designs in South African coinage.
Struck in .500 fine silver, the 50 cents coin replaced the earlier 5 shillings and retained a similar large format to ease the transition to decimal currency. It circulated widely and remains one of the most popular and recognisable coins from South Africa’s early republican period.
