Rumer Godden’s The Old Woman Who Lived in a Vinegar Bottle

The Old Woman Who Lived in a Vinegar Bottle by acclaimed British author Rumer Godden is a beautifully illustrated children’s tale first published by Macmillan in 1972. This original Macmillan edition features the distinctive artwork of Mairi Hedderwick, who would later become particularly well known as the creator and illustrator of the much-loved Katie Morag books.

Rumer Godden’s story draws upon a traditional folk tale about an old woman who lives simply in a curious dwelling known as a vinegar bottle. When an act of kindness brings the possibility of having her wishes granted, her modest circumstances begin to change. As her desires grow increasingly ambitious, the story develops into an engaging exploration of contentment, greed and appreciating what one already has. Godden gives the traditional tale warmth and humour, while Hedderwick’s colourful illustrations provide an appealing visual interpretation of the old woman’s changing fortunes.

Rumer Godden was a prolific and highly regarded twentieth-century author whose work encompassed novels, memoirs and children’s literature. Her children’s books remain particularly collectible, and early illustrated editions have enduring appeal among enthusiasts of classic British children’s literature. This 1972 first edition, published by Macmillan London Limited, is a desirable early collaboration between Godden and illustrator Mairi Hedderwick and an attractive addition to a collection of vintage children’s books, illustrated books, folk tales or Rumer Godden titles.
