The Southern African Diaries of Thomas Leask 1865–1870 is an important documentary record of nineteenth-century Southern Africa, edited by the distinguished historian and archivist J. P. R. Wallis. Published in 1954 for the Central African Archives, this volume preserves the observations, experiences and personal records of Thomas Leask during a formative period in the history of the region.
Diaries of Thomas Leask provides a valuable firsthand account of travel, settlement, trade, frontier life and interactions with the diverse peoples and landscapes of Southern Africa. Such contemporary narratives are increasingly sought after by historians because they offer perspectives unavailable in later secondary works. Through daily observations and personal reflections, the author documents a rapidly changing world during the latter half of the nineteenth century.
Diaries of Thomas Leask forms part of the highly respected Central African Archives documentary series, a collection that remains a cornerstone of Rhodesiana and Africana research. The series was produced to preserve rare historical manuscripts and journals relating to Central and Southern Africa and continues to attract collectors, institutions and scholars worldwide.
Collectors of Rhodesiana, missionary history, colonial-era travel narratives and African exploration literature will appreciate the significance of this volume. Diaries of Thomas Leask is equally valuable as a research resource for those interested in the political, social and economic development of Southern Africa during the Victorian era.
An increasingly difficult-to-find archival publication that represents an important contribution to the recorded history of Southern Africa.
