The Day Jean-Pierre Went Round the World by Paul Gallico is a charming and beautifully illustrated children’s adventure, first published by William Heinemann in 1965. Featuring Gallico’s memorable guinea pig character Jean-Pierre, the story takes its small hero on an extraordinary journey around the world, combining animal fiction, travel and adventure with the author’s characteristic warmth and humour.
The Day Jean-Pierre Went Round the World provides young readers with an imaginative journey through unfamiliar places and encounters, while the story celebrates curiosity, courage and the excitement of discovering the wider world. Paul Gallico was particularly accomplished at writing stories in which animals possess distinctive personalities and emotional lives, and Jean-Pierre is an appealing example of this style.
A particularly attractive feature of this first edition is the artwork by Gioia Fiammenghi. Her lively illustrations complement Gallico’s story throughout, while the colourful illustrated boards give The Day Jean-Pierre Went Round the World considerable decorative and collectable appeal. The front cover depicts Jean-Pierre alongside various animals and the Empire State Building, immediately capturing the international theme of the story.
Published by William Heinemann Ltd. in 1965, this is the first edition of an appealing mid-20th-century children’s book. The Day Jean-Pierre Went Round the World is a desirable addition to collections of Paul Gallico, vintage animal stories, illustrated children’s literature and classic British children’s books.
