The Dragon Hoard by Tanith Lee is a wonderfully imaginative children’s fantasy and the first published book by an author who would go on to become one of the most distinctive voices in modern fantasy literature. First published by Macmillan in 1971, this early work already displays Lee’s flair for transforming traditional fairy-tale ingredients into something playful, eccentric and distinctly her own.
The Dragon Hoard begins with a royal mistake that has disastrous consequences for a kingdom, setting in motion a fantastical adventure involving princes, princesses, enchantment, dragons and a decidedly unusual quest. Rather than presenting a conventional heroic fairy tale, Lee approaches familiar fantasy conventions with humour and wit, making The Dragon Hoard an entertaining example of British children’s fantasy from the early 1970s.
This edition is illustrated by Graham Oakley, the acclaimed British illustrator and creator of The Church Mice books. His detailed illustrations complement Lee’s comic fantasy and add considerable charm to the book.
Of particular bibliographical interest, this is the 1971 first UK edition of The Dragon Hoard, published by Macmillan London Ltd. The copyright page records the original SBN as 333 12850 8, which converts to the modern 13-digit ISBN 9780333128503.
For collectors of Tanith Lee, vintage children’s literature, illustrated fantasy and early works by significant fantasy writers, this is an appealing copy of an important title despite its former library status.
Condition – Very Good
