The Geology of South Africa by Alex L. du Toit is one of the most important early geological studies ever published on Southern Africa and remains a highly sought-after reference among collectors, academics, mining historians, and Africana enthusiasts. Published in 1939 by Oliver & Boyd in Edinburgh and London, this revised and enlarged second edition presents a comprehensive examination of the geological structure, mineral systems, rock formations, and palaeontological history of South Africa.
Alex L. du Toit was internationally respected for his pioneering contributions to geology and continental drift theory, and this substantial work showcases his detailed understanding of the region’s complex geological systems. The Geology of South Africa covers the Witwatersrand System, Bushveld Igneous Complex, Karroo formations, Cape System, volcanic pipes, economic geology, soils, and the broader geological history of South Africa. Of particular interest is the extensive treatment of economically important mineral-bearing regions which played a major role in the development of South Africa’s mining industry.
This second edition of The Geology of South Africa contains 41 plates, 68 text figures, and a geological map, all of which are present in this copy. The book is an essential reference for collectors of Africana, geology, mining history, earth sciences, and rare scientific works relating to Southern Africa. The original red cloth binding with gilt titling gives the volume an attractive period appearance and strong shelf presence.
Copies of this title in complete and well-preserved condition are becoming increasingly difficult to source, especially examples retaining all maps and plates. The Geology of South Africa is an important and collectible scientific work from one of South Africa’s most influential geologists.
