The Herb & Spice Book by Sarah Garland is a beautifully illustrated and impressively comprehensive reference devoted to the cultivation, history and practical uses of herbs and spices. First published in 1979 by Frances Lincoln Publishers, this substantial 288-page hardcover combines botanical knowledge with gardening, cookery, household use and traditional herbal applications, making it an appealing vintage reference for gardeners, cooks and collectors of illustrated natural-history books.
Garland examines a remarkably broad selection of plants, with the work covering nearly 300 herbs and spices. The Herb & Spice Book explores their botanical characteristics and historical associations while also providing practical information on growing and harvesting herbs. Its scope extends well beyond the garden, discussing culinary uses as well as traditional applications in cosmetics, herbal preparations and the household. Subjects include dyes, soaps, potpourris and other ways in which aromatic and useful plants have traditionally been employed.
One of the book’s particular attractions is its visual presentation. Botanical illustrations complement the informative text, while photographs and other illustrations help create a reference work that is equally suitable for browsing or consultation. The combination of gardening advice, culinary information, botanical identification and historical background gives The Herb & Spice Book lasting usefulness despite its original 1979 publication date.
This is the first edition, making The Herb & Spice Book an attractive addition to a collection of vintage gardening, botanical, herbal or culinary books. A substantial and visually appealing reference from an era when large-format illustrated herbals enjoyed considerable popularity.
Condition – Fair
The hardcover boards remain presentable with gilt spine titling, but there is significant old water staining to the endpaper and adjoining areas, particularly around the lower and outer edges. Evidence of previous tape or adhesive is also visible. The dust jacket shows moderate to heavy edge and corner wear, including rubbing, creasing and small losses/tears, particularly around the spine ends and lower corners.
