The Natal Rugby Story by Alfred Herbert is a comprehensive and richly illustrated history of rugby in Natal, South Africa, published in 1980 in conjunction with the Natal Rugby Union. Edited by Reg Sweet, this first edition chronicles more than a century of rugby heritage, tracing the development of the sport in Natal from its earliest years through to 1980.
The Natal Rugby Story explores the players, teams, personalities, memorable matches and significant achievements that helped establish Natal as one of South Africa’s most important rugby provinces. Illustrated with numerous historical photographs, it provides a fascinating account of the traditions, rivalries and sporting achievements associated with Natal rugby, long before the professional era and the emergence of the modern Sharks franchise.
This particular copy is especially collectable due to a remarkable collection of rugby personalities’ signatures and personal inscriptions, apparently gathered during the 1990s for an individual named James. The inscriptions include those attributed to legendary Natal and Springbok figures Gary Teichmann, Mark Andrews and Ian McIntosh, as well as former Natal players Jeremy (Jem) Thomson and Ruhan van Zyl.
Combining an authoritative historical account of Natal rugby with an unusual collection of signatures, The Natal Rugby Story represents an appealing opportunity for collectors of South African rugby memorabilia, Springbok autographs, Sharks history and regional sporting literature. It is particularly desirable for enthusiasts of Natal’s golden era and collectors seeking distinctive rugby books with personal associations to well-known players and coaches.
