The Welensky Story by Garry Allighan is an important contemporary biography of Sir Roy Welensky, one of the most influential and controversial political figures in the history of Central Africa during the final years of British colonial rule. Published by Macdonald in London in 1962, the book runs to 308 pages and is illustrated with photographic plates. A South African edition was also issued by Purnell & Sons in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Welensky served as the second and final Prime Minister of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, the political federation established in 1953 comprising Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. His career unfolded during a period of profound political change, as demands for African political representation and independence increasingly challenged the colonial political order.
In The Welensky Story, Allighan presents the life and political career of a man who regarded the Federation as a means of maintaining Central African unity and who became a prominent advocate of its continuation. The book was written with extensive assistance from Welensky himself, and Allighan was given access to private papers and previously unpublished documents. Contemporary descriptions therefore presented it as an authorised and comprehensive study of Welensky’s life and political work.
That close relationship with its subject also makes the book particularly interesting to modern readers. Contemporary reviewers noted its strongly sympathetic portrayal of Welensky and his political position, making the volume valuable not only as biography but also as a primary source reflecting the attitudes and political arguments surrounding the Federation in 1962.
