The 1863 United Kingdom 1 Florin, commonly known as the “Gothic Florin”, is one of the most admired coins of the Victorian era. Issued during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), this coin forms part of Britain’s early attempts to introduce a decimal-friendly currency system. The florin, valued at two shillings, represented one-tenth of a pound and was an important step toward eventual decimalisation.
The obverse features a striking Gothic-style portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a crown and veil. The surrounding inscription, rendered in ornate medieval-style lettering, reads “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIAR REGINA FID DEF”, translating to Victoria by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith. The elegant Gothic lettering and artistic style make this portrait one of the most distinctive in British numismatics.
The reverse displays an elaborate quartered shield of arms representing England, Scotland, and Ireland, set within an ornate Gothic framework. The shields are arranged in a cruciform pattern, with sceptres separating the quarters and the Garter star at the centre. The denomination “ONE FLORIN” appears below the design, with the date 1863 at the bottom.
Designed by renowned engraver William Wyon, the Gothic Florin is widely considered one of the most beautiful coins ever struck in Britain. It circulated throughout the United Kingdom and across parts of the wider British Empire during the mid-19th century.
Today, the Gothic Florin remains highly sought after by collectors due to its intricate design, historical importance, and status as one of the most artistic Victorian silver coins.
