The 1889 United Kingdom Double Florin, also known as the 4 Shillings, was issued during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901). Introduced in 1887 as part of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, the double florin was an attempt to extend the decimal-friendly florin system by creating a higher denomination equal to one-fifth of a pound.
The obverse features the “Jubilee Head” portrait of Queen Victoria, depicting her crowned and veiled, facing left. The surrounding Latin legend reads “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP”, translating to Victoria by the Grace of God, Queen of Britain, Defender of the Faith, Empress of India. This portrait was used on British coinage between 1887 and 1893 and is one of the most recognisable images of the Queen.
The reverse displays a striking cruciform arrangement of crowned shields representing England, Scotland, and Ireland, separated by sceptres, with the Star of the Order of the Garter at the centre. The denomination “FOUR SHILLINGS” and the date 1889 appear around the design.
Despite its impressive size and design, the double florin proved unpopular in circulation because it was often confused with the smaller crown coin. As a result, it was only minted from 1887 to 1890, making it a short-lived and collectible denomination in British numismatics.
Struck in sterling silver, the double florin is today prized for its historical significance, large format, and beautiful Victorian design.
